This is almost always good news — almost always. Today it wasn’t good news. I learned today of the death of a sweetheart who I had a lovely relationship with in 1992-93. She was a dear person and we stayed acquaintances. I’m invoking the 5 of Cups. Grief, I learned so much from this woman. Tuesday, October 3, 2023: This morning I pulled the Four of Pentacles. This card always calls me to confront contradictions within myself, being both withholding and generous at the same time. I am invoking The Hanged Man, from the Meryl Tarot. This card speaks to our contradictions with the image of Meryl Streep as Isabella in Measure for Measure. Streep played Isabella in 1976, in Central Park as part of the New York Shakespeare Festival. Isabella is a complex and contradictory character. Isabella is deeply religious and virtuous, but she is also capable of deceit and manipulation. She is a powerful advocate for justice, but she is also willing to compromise her own values in order to save her brother. Monday, October 2, 2023: Today I pulled the Three of Swords. This, to me, is an interesting manifestation of The Mother in the realm of air. It’s a reminder that tragedy and sadness are a real part of life and the mother is there then too. I’m invoking this card in the Meryl Tarot. It tells us the story of Aunt Josephine, the sweet but timid guardian of the Baudelaire children in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Her fear of tragedy paralyzes her. Tragedy is part of life. We are mortal.
