Portals
Friday, November 10, 2023: Cheryl Strayed said in her book, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, “There’s no way to know what makes one thing happen and not another. What leads to what. What destroys what. What causes what to flourish or die or take another course.” She was writing about the death of her mother and the course of her life after that.
Today I pulled the Two of Wands, a portal. When I drive to or from Patterson, CA I am stepping through a portal to my past. It's the locale of our family tragedy. I lived there for eight years. I lived there when my first wife died just outside of town and we all had to find a way to go forward. I became a single parent of three boys there. I had loves there. I still do. I lived there when I met Sue. My sons and I left Patterson when I married Sue, stepping through that portal.
Thursday, Sue and I went back went to Patterson. My dear awesome friend Maria still lives there with her husband. Over 30 years ago Maria and I were both single parents. Our families became one family in a most amazing way. Maria and I were partners in a way that meant being there for each other no matter what. We had each other's backs.
Maria is also an amazing hair stylist. In 1994 Maria did Susie's hair for Sue and my wedding. She also did Sue's hair yesterday. Stepping through the portal again. Two cards are all about choices, for me. Every choice I made brought me to where I am now, to live the life I was meant to live.
And so, I am invoking The High Priestess. Susie and I drove home together. As Cheryl Strayed also said in Wild, “I only knew that it was time to go, so I opened the door and stepped into the light.”
